Cannons Open Season this Saturday at Harvard Stadium vs Long Island Lizards

BOSTON, MA - Monday, May 9, 2011 - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced their 25-man active roster and 6-man practice squad for the start of the 2011 season, according to Cannons general manager Kevin Barney.

The Cannons open their 2011 MLL season this Saturday, May 14 at 7pm with a home game against the Long Island Lizards at Harvard Stadium. The Cannons split the 2010 series against Long Island as each team won on their home field. The Cannons finished 2010 with a 5-1 home record.

"We had three great weekends of training camp and are excited with the roster we've put together," said Bill Daye, head coach and director of player personnel for the Cannons. "Every year, it gets more difficult as the talent level has increased tremendously. Our goal is to assemble the best 25 players who understand their roles and give us the opportunity to compete each weekend with our ultimate goal of advancing to championship weekend and playing for the Steinfeld Cup."

Attackman Matt Poskay returns as a captain of the Cannons in 2011. Poskay was named the 2010 Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Player, leading the league with 45 goals and becoming the all-time leader in goals for the Cannons with 140 in his career.

Local products Max Quinzani (Duxbury, MA), Mike Stone (Wellesley, MA), and Matthew Smalley (Cumberland, RI) reclaimed their spots on the active roster, along with Winchester, MA native JJ Morrissey. Morrissey, who played for the LA Riptide in 2006-08, was picked up in the 2010 MLL Supplemental Draft after a hiatus from lacrosse to teach abroad.

The Cannons will start the season with one extra man on the active roster due to the absence of 2009 Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Player Paul Rabil for game one. Rabil will miss the first game to play in the NLL Championship Game for the Washington Stealth on Saturday night.

Jake Beebe (Sudbury, MA), Bruce Bickford (Providence, RI), Patrick Gaffney (Worchester, MA), Kevin Gould (Duxbury, MA) Western New England College product Jon Hayes and Cornell graduate Pierce Derkac were named to the practice squad.
