Cannons Add 14 in Supplemental Draft

March 18, 2016
Boston MA – December 12, 2012– The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, added 14  players to the 2013 pre-season roster in today’s MLL Supplemental Draft. The Cannons selected midfielder/face-off specialist Chris Mattes in the first round with the 6 th overall pick.

“We needed to add support at the face-off X, and we were able to do that right away with Chris,” said Cannons head coach Steve Duffy.

As a rookie in 2011, Mattes played in one game for the Cannons backing up starter Chris Eck, going 7-22 on face-offs with five ground balls in a 10-9 victory over Denver. Picked up by Denver in 2012, Mattes played six games for the Outlaws last season with a 50-177 overall record.

The Cannons added another face-off specialist in the 8 th round (62 nd overall) with Craig Bunker, a 2011 graduate of Colby College in Maine and Topsfield, MA native.

To strengthen the defense, the Cannons picked six players at the position. Ryan Nizolek (4 th round, 30 th overall) and Pat Gaffney (9 th round, 70 th overall) will return to Boston, plus new additions Tom Celentani (2 nd round, 14 th overall), Jeff Brown (6 th round, 46 th overall), Tim Langmaid (10 th round, 78 th overall), and Frank Tufano (11 th round, 86 th overall). The Cannons return Eric Hagarty (12 th round, 94 overall) as a back-up goalie and add Mike Gabel (3 rd round, 22 nd overall) for additional security in net.

“Obviously another priority was adding depth to our defense,” said Duffy. “Overall, we’re happy with the guys we picked up and hope that a number of them will contribute in 2013. We brought back a few guys who have already proven themselves as contributors, plus a few new guys we’re excited to get a look at in March.”

The Cannons added midfielder Scott LaRue, who played in five games for the Charlotte Hounds as a rookie last season. JJ Gilbane (5 th round, 40 th overall) and Marty Bowes (6 th round, 44 th overall), who were on the Cannons’ Collegiate Inactive List throughout the 2012 season, also return to the midfield. Jeff Cohen (7 th round, 54 th overall), a 2012 Harvard graduate, was the lone addition to the Cannons’ attack.

“In addition to filling a few specific holes, we were looking for the best players available to put together a competitive roster for training camp, which I think we achieved,” said Cannons general manager Kevin Barney.

Immediately following the draft, the Cannons traded veteran defenseman Jack Reid to the Long Island Lizards for a conditional pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft.

Next up is the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft which will take place Friday, January 11 in Philadelphia as part of the US Lacrosse National Convention.
