Cannons Partner with Greater Boston Food Bank

March 18, 2016

The Boston Cannons are proud to partner with The Greater Boston Food Bank this season. To get things started, Kevin Buchanan, Mike Stone, Kevin Gould, Coach Duffy and members of the front office visited GBFB headquarters last night to volunteer sorting food.

Stone and Gould positioned themselves at the start of the line, emptying donated food onto the conveyor belt for the front office staffers and other volunteers to sort. Buchanan and Coach Duffy headed down to the basement, taking the filled, sorted boxes and loading them onto palettes to be taken to various organizations in the area to help feed a huge number of families in the greater Boston area.

How can Cannons fans get involved? Bring food to donate to our June 4th home game at Harvard Stadium. 100% juice boxes, cans of tuna fish or peanut butter are best, but anything you can bring will be appreciated.

Partnership Includes Cannons Staff and Players Volunteering at The Greater Boston Food Bank and a Food Drive at the Saturday, June 4th Cannons Game

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced a partnership with The Greater Boston Food Bank for the upcoming season. The partnership will include various elements, including on-site volunteering May 18, a physical food drive at the June 4 th Cannons game and a virtual food drive launching today.

“This season, we’re looking at new ways to get involved and give back to the greater Boston community, and working with The Greater Boston Food Bank is one of the best ways to do that,” said Cannons general manager Kevin Barney. “We’re especially looking forward to getting our fans involved, allowing for a much greater impact in the fight against hunger in the region.”

“The Greater Boston Food Bank will increase its food distribution by nearly 10 percent – or 3.5 million pounds of food - over the next two years in order to address a meal gap of nearly 89 million meals. That’s how many meals it would take to feed three meals a day to everyone in eastern Massachusetts who needs our help, and we’re working to provide enough food for at least one of those meals a day,” said Catherine D’Amato, president and CEO of The Food Bank. “To do that, we’ll need help from everyone, so we’re thankful that the Boston Cannons and their fans are joining us in the fight against hunger.”

Beginning today, Cannons fans can make an online donation to The Food Bank at Donations can be made in a chosen dollar amount or the exact amount needed to buy specific items needed, including peanut butter, tuna fish and 100% juice boxes.

On May 18, Boston Cannons staff and players will volunteer at The Food Bank headquarters, helping to sort food for distribution.  The Cannons will post images and video of the experience to the team’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages to encourage fans to donate online or in person at the June 4 th Cannons game.

On Saturday, June 4 th, the Cannons will host the Chesapeake Bayhawks for The Greater Boston Food Bank Night at Harvard Stadium. Prior to game time at 7pm, The Food Bank will have a truck in the Fan Zone collecting donations from fans. Fans are encouraged to bring peanut butter, canned tuna fish and 100% juice boxes.

During the game, the Cannons will continue to raise awareness of the partnership and The Food Bank’s mission through video and audio announcements, an on-field recognition ceremony and a Text to Give campaign, through which fans can text donations during the game.
