Showcase team will play in conjunction with MLL events
(QUINCY, MA) October 16, 2018 – The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today the creation of a Junior Cannons program. This program offers elite junior athletes the opportunity to wear the Boston Cannons Shield and represent the best lacrosse players in New England. With two teams at the U11 (graduating classes of 2026-2027) and U13 (graduating classes of 2024-2025) level, these teams will compete in two local showcase games in Boston and at least one other showcase event in another Major League Lacrosse city, prior to a Cannons away game.
Cannons’ Head Coach Sean Quirk and Assistant Coach Ben Rubeor will take point on these new teams. These programs will be held to the same professional standards of the Boston Cannons, as they will wear Cannons uniforms, including their helmets.
“The Junior Cannons is a tremendous opportunity for student athletes to be around and be coached by some of the best players in the world,” said Quirk. “The Cannons are committed to building the foundation of lacrosse players as young men both on and off the field.”
There will be two open tryouts held to field these two teams. Thirty players will be listed to each roster, with an announcement on teams set for early December. The first open tryout will be held at Thayer Academy on Monday, November 12. The U11 tryouts will run from 10am to noon, with the U13 running 12:30pm to 2:30pm. The second set of open tryouts will be on November 17 at Endicott College. The U11 tryouts will run from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and the U13 will follow shortly after, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Players only need to attend one tryout to be considered for the Junior Cannons Showcase teams. Evaluators will include Quirk, Rubeor, and other area club coaches. Tryouts have a fee of $85 and will include a branded Cannons pinnie. Please plan to come in full pads.
If selected, there is no fee to be on the team, however parents/guardians will be responsible for travel and meals on the road. Junior Cannons uniform and helmet will be provided to all Junior Cannons players.
“We’re very excited about the announcement of our Junior Boston Cannons program,” stated Cannons’ President Ian Frenette. “For 18 years, the best lacrosse athletes in the world have played with the Cannons organization in Major League Lacrosse. This program will provide an opportunity for elite youth lacrosse athletes of New England to compete in a Cannons uniform and represent the New England lacrosse community in a series of showcase games in partnership with the Cannons and MLL.” This program is not a year-round club team that will keep players from their existing club team commitments. It’s meant to complement those club teams and provide a unique experience for all those who participate.
