MetroLacrosse to Honor Matt Dwyer at Faceoff at Fenway

Dwyer Will Receive the Jersey Award for Years of Commitment to the Nonprofit

October 15, 2013 – BOSTON, MAMetroLacrosse, a nonprofit whose mission is to inspire personal, educational and athletic success among Boston’s urban youth and teens, will present Cannons president and founding owner Matt Dwyer with the Jersey Award at their Faceoff at Fenway fundraiser event on Wednesday, November 13. The Jersey Award recognizes individuals whose long-term commitment has made a deep impact on MetroLacrosse’s mission.

“Matt has been one of our biggest supporters since day one, and we would not be where we are today without his unwavering commitment to the children in our program,” said MetroLacrosse president and CEO Michael Levin.

A pillar of the Massachusetts lacrosse community, Dwyer joined MetroLacrosse in 2001 as one of its founding board members, and went on to serve as Board Chair. In addition, he founded Weston Youth Lacrosse, co-founded the Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse League. The Boston Globe has called him “Greater Boston’s Pied Piper of Lacrosse.”

“Every child should have the opportunity to be a member of the lacrosse community and learn the sport's life lessons from spirited, dedicated mentors,” Dwyer said. “I know I've been inspired by the MetroLacrosse coaches, staff, and supporters spreading the game in Boston neighborhoods.”

In 2001, Dwyer brought professional lacrosse to the area as a founding owner of the Boston Cannons, one of the original franchises of Major League Lacrosse. In addition to contributing to the growth of lacrosse through their games and camps and clinics throughout New England, under Dwyer’s leadership the Cannons have been a continuous supporter of MetroLacrosse. Through the Cannons Care initiative, the Cannons and team sponsors provide an annual college scholarship to MetroLacrosse players. Additionally, Cannons players volunteer their time each season to coach MetroLacrosse players at practices and clinics.

The second annual Faceoff at Fenway event includes an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, and guest speakers, with all proceeds benefiting the 600 inner-city kids in MetroLacrosse programs. Faceoff at Fenway is Wednesday, November 13, 6-9pm. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased at
