Player Spotlight: Colin Briggs

March 18, 2016
Midfielder Colin Briggs was acquired from the Charlotte Hounds back in February in return for the Cannons' second round draft pick in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft.

The University of Virginia standout player was drafted sixth overall by the Denver Outlaws in the 2012 Collegiate Draft. While with Denver, Briggs saw action in eight games, tallying two goals and four assists playing mostly defensive midfield.

While playing for UVA, Briggs scored his season high 29 goals in 2011 and almost saw that number again with 22 goals during his senior season in 2012. In 2011, Briggs was named the most outstanding player of the NCAA tournament and was MVP of Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Classic with a three goal performance against Cornell.

We asked him a few questions…

What is your best lacrosse memory?

Winning the 2011 NCAA Championship

If you could challenge any professional athlete in lacrosse, who would you choose and why?

Chris Bocklet....playing at UVA with him for 4 years, I’m pretty sure I could D him up most of the time and I would love to have him play defense on me

Most embarrassing song on your iPod?

Where is your dream travel destination?

When, how, and why did you start playing lacrosse?

I started playing lacrosse around 6 years old. I grew up in Long Island and most of my extended family played. My family moved to Rhode Island when I was 4 and there really were no leagues so my dad and some other guys in our area started up a youth organization in South Kingstown, RI. At first I had to play with much older kids and got pushed around pretty good but I think it helped toughen me up a little bit.

What is your hidden talent?

I am a very talented karaoke singer. My specialties are Creed and Michael Jackson but will sing pretty much anything. I am looking to perform at birthdays and weddings in the near future.

What do you like to do when you’re not playing lacrosse?

I like going to the beach as much as possible in the summer and go skiing in the winter. When I was in college I could not go skiing and so I am trying to make up for missing out all those years.

Do you have any superstitions? Pregame rituals?

Nothing too crazy…I like to have a similar warm up routine every game. Stretching before going out for warm-ups, coming back in and putting eye black on and rubbing icy hot on my legs right before going out for gametime. The pregame schedule is different in the MLL compared to college so I am still trying to figure out my go to warm up and stretching. If I have a good game I typically try and do the exact same routine before the next game.

If you could play for another Boston sports team, which would it be and why?

I would like to be the next slot receiver for the New England Patriots. I had pretty good hands when I played receiver in High School and basically am not big enough to play any other position except the punter or kicker. Hopefully I get a try-out before Tom Brady retires.

What reality TV show would you appear on and why?

Man vs Food…I am not sure if that falls under “reality TV” but I want to win one of those food challenges they have in the end of the show. I want to get a t-shirt and have my picture on the champions wall.

What is your favorite thing about being a member of the Boston Cannons?

I live in Boston and so being able to play 8 home games in front of the Boston fans has been great. They are the best in the league and they really help give us energy for all of our home games. This is the first year they have been cheering for me and I like that much better than being on the opposing team.

Favorite book and favorite movie?

I recently finished the Hunger Games trilogy and loved it. I think that was the fastest I have ever read, I couldn’t put them down. My favorite movie would have to be Old School, it was the first movie Will Ferrell and all those guys did together and they have made some great ones since.

What advice would you give to an aspiring lacrosse player?

Try and play as much as possible. Going in the backyard and shooting is great but I think it is more important to hit the wall every day. Not everyone is going to be able to shoot like Paul Rabil but if you are a good passer you will be able to excel at any level.

What is your favorite meal?

Favorite thing about UVA?

The campus in the springtime is pretty amazing. Charlottesville is so beautiful and when it starts getting nice out there is nothing better than being on campus or on The Corner which is the main strip of stores and restaurants. Miss that place.
