Cannons Week 3 Preview

MLL Week Three Preview – Boston at Long Island

Meg Andrews

The Boston Cannons will look to improve to 3-0 on the season when they take on the Long Island Lizards (-2) at Stony Brook University this Thursday May 27 at 7:30 p.m.  This will be the home-opener for the Lizards.

The Lizards have had a challenging start to the 2010 Major League Lacrosse season with two losses against the Chesapeake Bayhawks (8-16) and the Denver Outlaws (10-13).

The Boston Cannons have had a strong start to the 2010 season with two wins against the Denver Outlaws (16-13) and the Chicago Machine (17-15). The Cannons early success is attributed to strong team chemistry among new midfielders Kevin Buchanan, who was named Bud Light Game MVP during last week’s game against Chicago; Brad Ross, who has contributed a total of eight points in the first two games of the season; and veterans Matt Poskay, who received his 100th career point in last Saturday’s game; and Paul Rabil, who made his MLL season debut this past weekend.

Although the team has had an early success, Cannons players and Head Coach Bill Daye understand the importance of staying focused and not taking any opponent lightly, including Long Island. “There is something about those [Long Island] guys. They play a tough game,” Rabil said. The Cannons are determined to stay focused to overcome their 2009 0-2 record against the Lizards. “I like the direction we’re going in, but we have a tough game down in Long Island,” stated Coach Daye. “It’s only game three, this is a long season and we have a lot of work to do.  I feel we’ll be ready to go on Thursday night as long as we limit the mistakes and execute on both ends of the field.”

The Cannons will also be facing the obstacle of playing their first away-game of the season. The team will have to work hard to get a “w” without the presence of their record-breaking 10,615 enthusiastic fans. “There’s definitely an advantage playing at home and for us in front of the Cannon’s faithful,” Coach Daye stated.  “In this league you have to play anywhere and although we won’t have our crowd behind us, I feel we’ll be ready to go on Thursday night.”

With two losses into the season, the Lizards are sure to take advantage of their season home-opener and play hard to stir things up to try and defeat the undefeated Cannons.

The gamewill be broadcast live on ESPN3.com and on Comcast SportsNet New England and a replay will be shown on Universal Sports Friday at 4:30p.m.
