June 23, 2012 - ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Boston Cannons never led as they fell to the Chesapeake Bayhawks (7-1) tonight, 14-13. Paul Rabil's seven points on two two-point goals and three assists were not enough as former Cannons goaltender Kip Turner was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his 17-save performance. The Cannons dropped to 5-3 and third place in Major League Lacrosse.
Chesapeake took control early on three straight goals - a man-up tally from Drew Westervelt, John Grant Jr's first and a two-pointer by Michael Kimmel - to take a four point lead. The Cannons settled and pulled within one before the end of the quarter on a goal from Kevin Buchanan and Rabil's first two-pointer.
The efficient scoring continued for both teams as the second quarter was all two-pointers: Rabil notched his second of the night while Kyle Dixon, the MLL's all-time leader in the category, added two, giving the Bayhawks an 8-5 lead into the break.
Ryan Boyle scored back-to-back goals to open the second half, bringing the Cannons back within one, but Chesapeake maintained the lead as both teams scored four goals in the quarter. The Cannons stayed within striking distance throughout the final 15 minutes of play on Matt Poskay'ssecond goal of the night, a two-pointer from Pat Heim and rookie Chris Boland's first career goal in his professional debut, but it was not enough as the Bayhawks held on for the one-goal decision.
Jordan Burke, last week's MLL Defensive Player of the Week, matched Turner's strong play in goal with 13 saves of his own for Boston.
After dropping all three games to the Cannons last season, including the 14-13 semi-final loss during Hurricane Irene here at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Chesapeake emerged with the victory in the teams' first meeting of 2012. The Bayhawks travel to Harvard Stadium for a re-match on July 28.
The MLL All-Star Game is up next on Saturday, June 30 at FAU Stadium in Palm Beach County, Florida. Six Cannons are making the trip: Mike Stone, Brian Farrell and Jordan Burke will play for Cannons head coach Steve Duffy on the Young Guns, while Paul Rabil, Kevin Buchanan and Chris Eck are on the Old School roster.
