In 2012
The Cannons faced the Ohio Machine in their home finale in Boston on August 4, winning by a score of 19-13. After Ohio scored three in a row, Kevin Buchanan scored an unassisted goal to put the Cannons on the board. Ohio added two more, but Ari Sussman had one and JJ Morrissey scored two to keep the Cannons within one at the end of the first quarter. The Cannons dominated the second quarter with two two-pointers, one from Paul Rabil and one from Brian Farrell, helping the Cannons take the 12-8 lead going into the break. In the third quarter, the Cannons pulled away with a six-goal lead going into the fourth, with goals from Buchanan, Ryan Boyle, Sussman and Matt Poskay. Rabil scored two unassisted goals in the fourth quarter to reach 68 points on the season, just three from matching the MLL single-season record of 71 set by John Grant, Jr. in 2007. In an awards ceremony following the game, Rabil was named the 2012 Cannons Offensive Player of the Year.
The Cannons traveled to Ohio to face the Machine in the regular season finale of 2012. The Machine took an early lead, but Matt Poskay scored twice in the first quarter and Mike Stone and Paul Rabil each had one to end the first quarter in a 4-4 tie. Stone, Pat Heim, Ari Sussman and Ryan Boyle each scored early in the second quarter to give the Cannons a three-point lead. But Ohio went on a five-goal run to end the first half, including two with less than a minute on the clock, to take an 11-9 lead into the break. In the third quarter, Stone completed his hat trick and Boyle scored his second goal to make the score 13-11, and put the Cannons back within two. In the fourth quarter, Rabil tied the game at 14. Kevin Buchanan scored all three of his goals in the fourth quarter and Boyle set up the Cannons' final three goals of the game to secure the 18-16 victory and a spot in MLL Championship Weekend.
