Local Lacrosse: Boston area high schools

Massachusetts Boys

Duxbury came up short in 2010 when their title streak was broken with a loss to  St. John’s Prep. The Duxbury Dragons lost in overtime 12-11 ending their six consecutive title runs. They look to make it back on top this year with a very competitive schedule. The Dragons will play their rival Billerica on April 13, and get a shot at revenge against St. Johns Prep on April 20 at home. Duxbury will also play a handful of other skilled prep schools such as BC High, The Rivers School, Xaverian Bros, and Bishop Guertin. On April 16, Duxbury heads to Harvard Stadium to challenge #1 ranked Garden City of N.Y. Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse High School Regional Rankings puts Garden City at #1 in the Northeast, while Duxbury enjoys a #6 spot in front of #7 ranked Deerfield, also out of Massachusetts.

The Division 1 Player of the Year, Grant Whiteway, will return to help Billerica contend for the state title. Billerica has been strong in years past and made it to the title game in 2008, only to lose in overtime to Duxbury. With the player of the year leading the squad, Billerica will round out its season with some tough match-ups. They will face defending champs St. Johns Prep on May 18. This is the first of four games in a week span. Billerica will also play Andover High School on the 20th. Then they travel to Lincoln-Sudbury who will look for a shot at the title. The regular season ends with a home game against Xaverian Brothers. Whiteway is ten points shy of breaking the career scoring record at Billerica.

In most cases, the defending champs are favorites to win the state title. St. John’s Prep will look to repeat as champions even with the graduation of key seniors. Their top middie, attackman, defender, LSM, and starting goaltender all graduated last year. It is no doubt that a strong senior class is necessary for a shot at the title.  Two key seniors will help lead St. John’s back to the title game. Face-off specialist Mark MacDonald is headed to Sacred Heart next fall, but will use his skills to keep St. John’s among the top contenders. Helping him will be middie Matt Scalise who will attend Harvard. The play of these two seniors is essential in St. John’s success.

Look for Lincoln-Sudbury, Medfield, and Concord-Carlisle to make a run at the title as they look to upset some of the more favored teams in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Girls

Framingham will look to follow up a stellar 2010 season. They went 24-1-1 on their way to winning their third state title in ten years. They will rally behind All-American Rachel Igoe. The Flyers have a great chance to repeat as title winners as Igoe looks to have an outstanding senior season. She will need help when the Flyers play some of the top teams around Mass. Framingham has to play Wellesley two times during the season, who have proven to be a formidable opponent. They meet on April 12 at Wellesley, and then face off at home on May 5. Framingham topped Longmeadow by one goal 8-7 in last year’s championship game.

Expect Lincoln-Sudbury to challenge Framingham as one of the top teams in Massachusetts. LS has a junior standout in Madison Acton. Although she is only a junior, she is a member of the U.S. 19-and-under national team. LS has a young, but very talented and threatening team. You could see them competing for a state title in June.

The Acton-Boxborough girls team will be lead by three senior captains. They have plenty of experience as they made it to the D1 North semifinals last year. The three senior captains will go on to play in college. Annie Nero, an attackman, will attend Tufts. She will play alongside midfielders Karaline Smith (Uconn), and Emily Everdell who will play for Franklin and Marshall next year. AB has to play Duel County League opponent Lincoln Sudbury twice. They play at LS on April 26, and at AB on May 17.

Some other teams to follow are Needham, Longmeadow (last year’s runner ups to Framingham), Wellesley, and the LaxPower.com #1 ranked team in Mass, the Westwood Wolverines.
