Game Preview: Cannons vs Rattlers, June 18

The Boston Cannons (3-1) hit the road this weekend as they travel for the first time in the 2011 season. Their first stop will be in Rochester, New York to take on the relocated Rochester Rattlers (0-3) on June 18th at 7:00 PM EST in Sahlen’s Stadium.

Even with a slow start to the season, the Rattlers are excited to be back in Rochester. Attackman Ned Crotty is leading the Rattlers with 10 goals, 4 assists and 14 points this season. He has been the lone offensive spark for the Rattlers and the Cannons will have to guard him closely in order to pull of their fourth win on the season. Rochester fell to 0-3 quickly, most recently dropping a close one against the Hamilton Nationals, 13-14. Despite their fourth quarter run, in which the Rattlers scored 5 goals to Hamilton’s one, it was not enough to claim a comeback win. With this tough loss behind them, Rochester will be hoping for a great game from Crotty as they face the Cannons, but will also have to focus on marking Rabil and Ross on the defensive end.

The Cannons are going into their four game road trip with a blow out win against the Long Island Lizards. This game highlighted the Cannons’ offensive line as seven players scored. Matt Poskay led the way with four goals on the night while Ross was able to capitalize on his long shot with a pair of 2-point goals.

The Cannons have seen some great performances so far this season. Goalies Kip Turner and Jordan Burke have earned Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Defensive Player of the Week honors for their 21 save and 24 save performances, respectively. Burke has guarded the net for the past two wins, letting in only 7 goals during the 19-8 win against the Lizards on June 11th and leading the MLL with a 9.53 goals against average. The Cannons have also done well offensively as Brad Ross and Paul Rabil leading the way with 15 points each, tied for first in the league with Danny Glading (Chesapeake) and Brendan Mundorf (Denver). Rabil earned MLL Offensive Player of the Week honors for his five goal, two assist performance against the defending champion Bayhawks on June 4th.

Boston will have to keep this momentum going as they travel to Rochester, Chesapeake, Denver and Long Island before returning home to Harvard Stadium on July 23rd.

This game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com and will air on Comcast Sports Net New England Sunday, June 19th at 4pm.
