Boston Cannons vs. Denver Outlaws Game Preview - Sunday, July 3, 2011 at 9:00pm EST
Time to play King of the Mountain! The Cannons travel a mile high to the Rocky Mountains as the top two teams in Major League Lacrosse face off to start the second half of the season. The Boston Cannons (5-1) hope to continue their win streak through this weekend as they face the Denver Outlaws (5-1) for the second time this season. In their first match-up, the Outlaws traveled to Harvard Stadium on May 21st and walked away with a 13-12 victory despite the tough battle the Cannons showed in the second half.
These two teams sit atop the MLL standings and over the past two weeks have separated themselves from the rest of the league. The Cannons lead MLL with 92 points in their first six games, and Denver is only 5 back in second with 87. The Outlaws lead MLL in points against with 60, and guess who sits in second only 5 back with 65? The Boston Cannons. The Outlaws’ Brendan Mundorf leads MLL in scoring with 29 points. Shocker, the Cannons’ Paul Rabil is in second with 26 points on the campaign. The Outlaws’ Jesse Swartzman leads all goalies with a 9.57 goals against average. The pattern continues, as Jordan Burke is number two on the league leaders with a 10.21 GAA. Last weekend both teams had dominating wins and surprise, surprise, they both won by a 7 goal margin. What does all this mean? We are set for a great game on Sunday.
Denver’s only loss came against the Bayhawks, losing by only one point in overtime. Even with the half time lead, Denver lost control of the game in the final quarter with Chesapeake scoring 6 goals to the Outlaws’ two. In overtime, Chesapeake’s Ben Hunt scored the game winning goal. The Outlaws placed this game in the past and continued the season with two more wins. In their last game against the Long Island Lizards, Denver’s top offensive players, Brendan Mundorf and Connor Martin, combined for 11 points, scoring 4 and 5 goals respectively and leading the Outlaws to their fifth win in 2011.
The Boston Cannons only loss this season was to Outlaws on May 21 and they have had a four game winning streak since then, two of which have been on the road. Boston was able to squeeze by the Rattlers with a 16-14 victory in Rochester on June 18th despite a half time deficit. Matt Poskay, Paul Rabil and Max Quinzani were the playmakers this game scoring 5, 4 and 3 goals respectively. Only a total of 6 Cannons scored during this game while Rochester was led by Jordan McBride with 6 points on the night. Boston’s 17-10 victory against the Chesapeake Bayhawks on June 25th was a second half Cannons blowout with 11 goals scored to the Bayhawks 3. With three defensemen scoring, Jordan Burke saving 14 shots and an offensive run by Kevin Buchanan in the second half, the Cannons were able to shut down the Bayhawks, keeping Chesapeake’s top player, Danny Glading, to only one point on the night.
Under the lights at Invesco Field, the Cannons will seek to claim sole possession of the top spot in the league over the Outlaws. This game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.
