The Boston Cannons and Hamilton Nationals will face-off on Saturday in a rematch of the 2011 MLL Championship. The Cannons (2-0), who have outscored opponents 35-15 this season, look to continue their dominance. The Nationals (0-1) look to regroup after a 15-6 loss in Denver.
The teams split their regular season series in 2011. In each game, the road team emerged victorious. Hamilton won in Boston, 16-12, and Boston won in Hamilton, 13-8.
The Nationals are led by six-time defending Warrior MLL Defensive Player of the Year Brodie Merrill, former #1 overall pick Kevin Crowley, and 6’4’’, 254 lb. goalie Scott Rodgers.
What to look for:
Fast-breaks: Much of the Cannons offense has come in transition. Defensemen Kyle Sweeney (2 goals, 2 assists) and Brian Farrell (3 goals) are among the team leaders in points. Hamilton will look to slow down these gifted long-poles.
Season debuts: Kevin Buchanan, Pat Heim and Brad Ross are expected to make their first appearances of the season with their various NLL and collegiate commitments concluded. Ross (29 points), Buchanan (26 points) and Heim (13 points) were among the team leaders in 2011, playing a major role in the Cannons’ championship run.
2-point threats: Ross and Paul Rabil have tied for the team leaders in 2-point goals each of the past two summers. The return of Ross should help stretch the field and add another element to the Cannons’ offense.
