Quint Kessenich: MLL 2009 Regular-Season Superlatives

We’re just a week and a day away from the New Balance Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend, with four teams gathering their strength with an off-weekend before making the last push at the two finals wins that lay between them and the Steinfeld Cup. Denver vs. Boston (at noon on ESPN2) and Long Island vs. Toronto (following the first game, not on TV) are on the horizon, but it’s time to look back at the MLL season that was, as six teams battled every week for the right to get where four have made it so far. Here’s a few thoughts on the highlights of MLL 2009, with my personal league ‘Superlatives’.

Simply the Best

Paul Rabil MVP
Rabil’s pursuit of the extraordinary has been the story of the summer. The second year pro from Johns Hopkins led the league in points with 53. It’s the first time a midfielder has led the MLL in scoring. It’s especially impressive considering the addition of the fourth long pole in 2009. Rabil’s 53 points are the second most ever by a midfielder.

Top Midfield Scoring Seasons All-Time
56pts - Blake Miller, 2004
53pts - Paul Rabil, 2009
47pts - Jay Jalbert, 2003
47pts - Brian Langtry, 2008
46pts - David Curry, 2002
45pts - Roy Colsey, 2006
