Cannons Lose Heartbreaker to Bayhawks, fall 16-15

FINAL STATS

BOSTON, MA - In another back and forth action packed thriller, the Cannons came out on the losing ending this time, falling to Chesapeake 16-15 Saturday night at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, MD. Chesapeake ends their four game losing streak with the win, but remain in last place in the MLL, and the Cannons fall to 3-4 on the season.

Chesapeake attackman Brendan Mundorf scored three of the final four goals for the Bayhawks, including the game winner with less than 3 minutes left. Cannons attackman Stephen Berger appeared to have scored the tying goal with 9 seconds left on the clock with a spectacular crease dive, but Bayhawks Head Coach Dave Cottle challenged the goal and after review the referee determinded Berger touched inside the crease before the goal was scored, upholding the lead for the Bayhawks.

The heated rival quickly started off in a battle. Just two minutes into the game Chesapeake got on the board with a goal from Ben Hunt, this goal prove to be the first of six for him on the night. Boston’s Kevin Buchanan responded immediately only to have his diving goal called back for a crease violation. Cannons’ rookie Rob Emery earned his first career goal on the power play when Jeff Reynolds of Chesapeake served a technical for shoving Buchanan into the crease.

Emery proved himself again putting up his second goal of the night for Boston, matched by Chesapeake’s Hunt. Brednan Mundord and Drew Westervelt each added a goal before Paul Rabil assisted Kevin Buchanan on his first of two goals.

Coming into the second quarter it was once again Chesapeake’s Hunt who started things off to finish off a hattrick. Stephen Berger responded with one of his own.  The battle continued when Polanco drew a five minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Buchanan and Berger took full advantage. Berger tallied his second of four goals in the quarter, whiel Buchanan finished off his hattrick. Brent Adams added one for Boston, their first two-pointer of the year, followed by 2 more goals from Berger.

The Cannons 11-7 lead at halftime didn’t last long as Chesapeake scored the first 4 goals out of the half.  The reminder of the game was back and forth scoring, but with teh Cannons only mustering 4 total goas in the half to the Bayhawks 9.

“You had to challenge the play,” Bayhawks Head Coach Dave Cottle said. “There was [nine] seconds left, and it was a bang-bang play. We had to.”

Boston’s Stephen Berger, who led the Cannons with four goals thought it was a tough call, stating, “It’s a tough game, it’s a tough call. I think that at the end of the day the new replays kind of make a difference. I don’t think we should have put ourselves in that situation in the first place. So kind of with that, we put our backs against the wall.”

Mundorf's goal capped a spirited comeback for the Bayhawks, who trailed by 11-17 at halftime. Boston returns home June 21st to face the  Ohio Machine at 8:00pm at Harvard Stadium.  Tickets are available by calling the Cannons at 617-746-9933 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.  The game will be broadcast on Major League Lacrosse’s Youtube Channel.
