Cannons Fall to Lizards in 3rd Overtime Game this Season

Lizards Score a 2 Point Goal with 17 seconds left to Tie it

Boston, MA (July 19, 2014) The Cannons looked destined for victory with a 15-13 lead with just over 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter before Mike Kimmel scored a 2 point goal with 17 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Cannons had their chance in overtime but an errant pass went wide leading to the game winning goal for New York by JoJo Marasco.

In a game that lacked superstar power, both teams missing starters due to the FIL World Championship, the Cannons were not able to take advantage of a great opportunity to move into 3rd place in the MLL Standings. The game had some sloppy play by both teams, especially in the midfield, with turnovers that often lead to the opponent scoring in transition.

The Cannons got off to a quick start when New York’s defense looked out of sync. Will Manny started the scoring for the Cannons just 2:23 into the game when he was assisted by rookie Rob Emery. Emery then scored the second goal 4 minutes later unassisted. New York got on the board just 46 seconds later when Tommy Palansek scored his first of 4 goals on the night. Manny scored just 3 minutes later on what looked like more of a slapshot in hockey than a shot in lacrosse. With the ball on the ground Manny swatted at the ball and it ended up in the back of the net. The Cannons were leading 3-1 before Tommy Palasek, Mike Kimmel and Brandon Mangan scored for the Lizards to take the lead 4-3. The Cannons retaliated with 2 goals in the last 20 seconds of the first quarter, one from Brent Adams with 18 seconds left and the other from Will Manny with .7 seconds left in the quarter.

The Lizards used a barrage of offense in the second quarter, scoring 5 goals including a 2 point goal to take the lead going into the half with a 10-8 lead. Ex-Cannon, Martin Cahill started the scoring for New York with a 2 point goal 7 minutes into the quarter. John Austin scored just minutes later for the Lizards. Stephen Berger scored 12:11 into the second quarter. Steve DeNapoli scored a minute later unassisted after a great juke in front of the goal. The Cannons closed out the scoring with 11 seconds left when Kyle Sweeney scored from behind the net on a great play by the long stick defender.

The Cannons came out firing after the half scoring 3 goals in a row, the first by Owen Blye after just 53 seconds. Ryan Boyle scored 2 minutes later and then Blye scored again. The Lizards ended the scoring in the third quarter just 13 seconds after the Blye goal with a score from Tommy Palasek. Both teams had good chances to score in the final 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter but were not able to capitalize. The quarter ended all tied at 11.

New York scored 2 goals to start the 4th quarter, both by JoJo Morasco. The Cannons then went on to score 4 goals in 8 minutes including Owen Blye’s 3rd goal of the half, 2 by Brent Adams and one by Mike Stone. The Cannons lead 15-13 with 1 minute left and appeared to be well on their way to victory. With 17 seconds left Mike Kimmel scored a 2 point goal to tie the game and send it to sudden death overtime. The overtime was the Cannons 3rd of the season and held a 1-1 record in overtimes.

The Cannons had an opportunity to score in overtime after an outstanding save by Jordan Burke but they passed the ball out of bounds losing possession. After an offside penalty by Will Manny the Lizards went a man up for 30 seconds. 20 seconds into the man up advantage Coca Cola Player of the Game JoJo Morasco slotted the ball over Jordan Burke’s left shoulder and into the back of the net to defeat the Cannons. The goal was Morasco’s 3rd of the game.

The Cannons are back in action next week when they travel to Florida for the first time in the team’s history to take on the newest franchise in Major League Lacrosse, the Florida Launch. They return home in 2 weeks on August 2nd at 3:00 pm to play the Florida Launch in the second to last game of the regular season.
