BOSTON, MA - Tuesday,January 25, 2011 - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced their 2011 season schedule. The 12-game schedule features six home games and the MLL All-Star Game at Harvard Stadium, all on Saturday evenings. The home schedule is highlighted by two appearances from New York rival the Long Island Lizards on May 14, opening night, and June 11.

Cannons head coach Bill Daye will bring the past two Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Players back to his 2011 squad in Matt Poskay (’10 MVP) and PaulRabil (’09 MVP). Poskay had a record-breaking year in 2010, setting the Cannons single season scoring record with 45 goals and in doing so became the Cannons all-time leading scorer with 140 tallies and counting. Rabil continued his dominant play for the Cannons and the US National Team in 2010. Along with his 21 goals in 10 games for the Cannons, Rabil led Team USA to the gold medal in the 2010 FIL World Championships and was named tournament MVP.
The Cannons roster also boasts local stars Max Quinzani, Mike Stone, J.J. Morrissey and Matt Smalley. Quinzani is a Duxbury, MA product who led Duxbury High School to three state championships and most recently captured the NCAA Championship with Duke University. Stone was a star at Wellesley High School and 3-time USILA All-American at Middlebury College. Morrissey was drafted by the Cannons in last month’s Supplemental Draft. The Winchester, MA native played his high school lacrosse at The Governor’s Academy and went on to play at the University of Virginia. Smalley, from Cumberland, RI, was a late round supplemental draft pick of the Cannons last year. He proved his worth early on as a strong wing man during face-offs and appeared in 10 games last season, finishing 2nd on the team with 41 ground balls.
Each Cannons home game will include an event or community theme. “The Cannons have always been committed to helping our community and the growth of the sport of lacrosse,” said Cannons Vice President and General Manager Mark Kastrud. “This season, each game will provide the Cannons and our fans a way to give back to the community.”
Saturday, May 14 is the Cannons 2011 home opener. This game will feature local youth lacrosse teams coming to Harvard Stadium for a full day of lacrosse. The main stadium field and four surrounding fields will be available for youth groups to host games prior to the Cannons game at 7pm. Youth organizations must pre-purchase group tickets in order to reserve field space.
The Cannons will host the Denver Outlaws on Saturday, May 21 and celebrate Military Appreciation Night as May 21 is also Armed Forces Day. The Cannons will donate tickets to local military bases and recognize the dedication of our military personnel throughout the game.
On Saturday, June 4 the Cannons will ask their fans to support the Greater Boston Food Bank by hosting a canned food drive at the game. Fans can bring canned food to the game and donation bins will be set up in the fan zone and at the stadium gates. The Cannons will recognize the work done by the GBFB during an in-game ceremony. The first 2,000 fans will also receive a 2011 Cannons team poster presented by Harvey Building Products.
Saturday, June 11will be MetroLacrosse Night. MetroLacrosse, a non-profit whose mission is to address the social and economic disparities that exist in urban settings by inspiring personal, educational and athletic success among urban youth and teens, has been the preferred community partner of the Cannons since the team’s inception in 2001. The Cannons will host a clinic for MetroLacrosse players on Friday night and will donate tickets for the kids to attend the Cannons game on June 11. During the game, the Cannons will highlight their 11-year partnership with MetroLacrosse. June 11 will also be a Family 4-Pack Night, including tickets to the IMAX Theater at the New England Aquarium.
The Hamilton Nationals will be the opponent on July 23 for Cannons Care Night. The Cannons will partner will several local non-profit organizations to provide them fundraising and public awareness opportunities.
August 13 will be the final home game of the 2011 season and the Cannons will celebrate it with Kids Night Out. This game will feature our annual Mascot Night as the Cannons mascot Boomer invites his friends from all local sports teams to come to Harvard Stadium. The Fan Zone will also have special interactive elements from the local police, fire and ambulance services. The Cannons will offer a special Family 4-Pack of tickets for this game.
Five games will be played at 7:00pm, with the June 11 contest against Long Island having a special 6:00pm start time as it will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
The Cannons will offer a special Family 4-Pack ticket package for the June 11 and August 13 games. For $79, fans will receive four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas, and added bonuses from Cannons partners. Harvard Stadium will also be the site of the 2011 MLL All-Star Game on Saturday, July 9. Boston was chosen to host the annual event after setting a professional lacrosse crowd record at Harvard Stadium of 11,771 at the 2010 MLL All-Star Game.
