Cannons in the NLL


It was an up and down weekend in the NLL for four Cannons as the Boston Blazers went one and one after they lost two games in as many nights last weekend.  Kevin Buchanan, Jack Reid, Mitch Belisle and Greg Downing enjoyed a hot start to the season with two wins before losing two overtime thrillers two weeks ago. Cannons star Paul Rabil had his best game of the young season with the Washington Stealth this week. Ryan Boyle, Patrick Heim and Kyle Sweeney continued their hot streak with the Philadelphia Wings, earning their second and third straight wins.

Week 4

January 28

Seven Cannons were in action this past Friday as the Philadelphia Wings were in town taking on the Blazers. Kevin Buchanan had an assist and picked up a loose ball in what turned out to be an 11-5 win for the Wings. Jack Reid had a strong effort with four loose balls and four forced turnovers. Mitch Belisle added three loose balls and four forced turnovers of his own for the Blazers defense. Greg Downing also picked up two loose balls. The Blazers struggled with only five goals as Wings goalie Brandon Miller stole the show with 43 saves. For the Wings, Ryan Boyle had an assist and forced a turnover, Kyle Sweeney scooped up three ground balls and Patrick Heim had a quiet night, going winless in three attempts in the face off circle. The game was close at halftime with the Wings leading five to three but they scored five goals in the third quarter to break the game open.

January 29

The Blazers traveled up to Rochester the next night  to take on the Knighthawks. Boston got back on track in a big way, trouncing the Knighthawks 16-7. Buchanan had a game high six assists to go along with two goals and three loose balls. Downing was all over the field collecting seven loose balls, tied for second on the team. Belisle and Reid had five ground balls of their own on defense. Buchanan continues his breakout season, standing fourth on the team in scoring behind the Blazers’ big three of Dan Dawson, Casey Powell and Josh Sanderson. Buchanan’s nine goals are good for 14thin the NLL.

Rabil had a huge game as the Stealth took on the Minnesota Swarm in St. Paul. Rabil had three goals and three assists to go along with five loose balls. Rabil kicked off the scoring for the Stealth in the first quarter and also netted the equalizer with three minutes and change to play in the fourth quarter. However, Rabil’s strong effort could not put the Stealth over the top as they fell to Swarm in overtime, 11-10.

The Wings picked up their third straight win by defeating the Colorado Mammoth in Philadelphia. Kyle Sweeney had a goal and four loose balls while Ryan Boyle tallied three assists and pick up three loose balls. The Wings exploded for ten goals in the first half as they held on to defeat the Mammoth 12-11 to move into second place in the East Division. Patrick Heim did not play in the game for the Wings.

Week 3

January 21

Buchanan had a strong weekend offensively, exploding for five goals and three assists Friday night in Toronto as the Blazers took on the Rock. The Blazers trailed by two in the final minute of the game, but Buchanan had a goal at 14:08 and then assisted on Casey Powell’s game-tying goal 24 seconds later to send the game into overtime. However, the Blazers couldn’t find the winner as game MVP Stephan Leblanc scored six minutes in to the extra period, ending the game at 15-14. Downing picked up his first point of the season on a 3rdquarter assist to Jamie Rooney. He also had one loose ball in the game. Belisle had six loose balls and two forced turnovers on defense and Reid had two loose balls and two forced turnovers.

January 22

The Blazers headed home the next night for a game against the Rochester Knighthawks.  Buchanan had another strong game, this time scoring a goal and dishing off three assists. Downing was all over the place, collecting seven loose balls, good enough for second in the game. Belisle had five loose balls and Reid had three to go along with two forced turnovers. However, strong efforts by the Cannons players were not enough as Shawn Evans scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the Knighthawks an 11-10 win.

Paul Rabil and the reigning league champion Washington Stealth got back to their winning ways after two straight opening weekend losses by defeating the Calgary Rouchnecks 19 - 14. Rabil continued to do the dirty work for the Stealth despite being a former MLL MVP. He collected an amazing 12 loose balls on the night to bring his total to 54 on the year. Rabil also had four assists, including three in the second half as the Stealth exploded for 12 second half goals.

Meanwhile, three Cannons got their first win of the season with the Philadelphia Wings after starting the season with two home losses. Ryan Boyle had a goal and two assists as the Wings headed to Colorado and took down the Mammoth. Patrick Heim continued his improvement as a face-off man going 13 for 24. He also had three assists, including a pass to Kyle Sweeney, who scored his first goal of the season. The Wings scored five goals in the 4thquarter to come back and beat the Mammoth 11-10 for their first win of the season.
