NCAA Weekend Recap


Throughout the NCAA Lacrosse season, we’ll be taking a look at the top players and matchups in college lacrosse, as well as keeping an eye Cannons draftees.

Note: Rankings reflect the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Click here for the newest Nike/Inside Lacrosse Top 20 Poll. Players in bold were drafted by the Cannons in the January MLL Collegiate Draft.

 

#12 Denver @ #1 Syracuse

Syracuse wins 13-7

Syracuse (1-0) got off to a fast start and went on to defeat Denver (0-1) by the score of 13-7 in the season opener for both teams Sunday, Feb. 20 at the Carrier Dome. The Orange scored six times in the opening quarter and never trailed in winning its 15th consecutive season opener. Sophomore JoJo Marasco and senior Stephen Keogh had two goals and two assists each to lead the Orange offense. In addition, SU got two goals apiece from redshirt junior Tim Desko and senior midfielders Jovan Miller and Josh Amidon. Junior Tommy Palasek tied his career high with two assists in his SU debut.

#16 Drexel @ #2 Virginia

Virginia wins 12-9

Chris Bocklet tallied five points on four goals and Shamel Bratton added a hat trick as the Virginia Cavaliers (1-0) topped the Drexel Dragons (0-1) on Saturday evening, 12-9, inside Klöckner Stadium in both teams' season openers.

#3 North Carolina @ Ohio State

Ohio State upsets UNC 13-8

The Ohio State men's lacrosse team upset North Carolina, 13-8, Saturday afternoon in front of 2,695 fans on a beautiful day at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes trailed early but chipped away at the lead to go into halftime tied with UNC at 6-all. Ohio State took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Tar Heels, 5-1, with four goals in the first five minutes. The Buckeyes held North Carolina to just 11 shots and two goals in the game's final 30 minutes.

Detroit Mercy @ #4 Maryland

Maryland wins 16-4

It was not the smoothest start to a season, but  University of Maryland men's lacrosse team got four points from four different Terps to give head coach John Tillman a 16-4 victory over Detroit Mercy in his first game at the helm of the Terrapin program.

#5 Duke vs. #6 Notre Dame

Notre Dame wins 12-7

Notre Dame men's lacrosse team opened its season in fine fashion with a 12-7 win over Duke on Sunday afternoon in front of 8,152 fans at Everbank Field. The contest was part of the inaugural Sunshine Classic.

#10 Hofstra @ Sacred Heart

Hofstra wins 10-6

Midfielder Steve Serling tallied three goals and four assists and attackman Stephen Bentz added three goals and one assist to lead #9 Hofstra to a 10-6 non-conference victory over Sacred Heart at Campus Field Saturday afternoon. The Pride improve to 2-0 on the season while the Pioneers dropped their 2011 opener.

#11 Johns Hopkins @ Towson

Hopkins wins 10-6

Johns Hopkins attackmen Zach Palmer, Kyle Wharton and Chris Boland combined for seven goals and four assists and the Blue Jay defense held host Towson scoreless for a stretch of 35:22 midway through the game as 11th-ranked JHU opened the 2011 season with a 10-6 victory before 3,226 fans at wind-blown Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win is JHU's 16th straight against the Tigers and the 900th all-time in school history. Johns Hopkins is the first men's lacrosse program in the nation to reach the 900-win mark.

Siena @ #5 Duke

Duke wins 20-6

Duke University senior attackman Zach Howell registered a career-high nine points from seven goals and two assists to lead the Blue Devils to a convincing 20-6 season-opening win over Siena College today at Koskinen Stadium. Eleven different Duke players notched a goal and 15 different Blue Devils registered at least one point overall in the game.
