(Boston, MA) March 2, 2011 -- The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse announced today the contract signings for the 2011 MLL Season following the March 1st deadline.
38 of the 40 contracts offered to Boston Cannons players were signed for the 2011 season. Headlining the signings were 2009 MLL MVP Paul Rabil and 2010 MLL MVP Matt Poskay.
Boston Cannons star midfielder Paul Rabil has agreed to a one-year contract with Major League Lacrosse (MLL) for the 2011 season. The 2009 MLL MVP, this will be Rabil's fourth season with the league and the Cannons. Also re-signed with the league is 2010 MLL MVP Matt Poskay. Last season, his fifth, Poskay set the all-time Cannons scoring record with 140 goals, as well as the single-season record with 45 on the year.
"We are pleased the signed contracts are in and the players are ready for the upcoming season," said Cannons head coach Bill Daye. "With the level of returning league veterans and new talent added this off season, I believe this will be our most competitive training camp yet. Each player will have to prove himself and earn his spot on the active roster."
The Cannons also return a crop of local talent who have signed their one-year agreements with the league. Max Quinzani (Duxbury), Mike Stone (Wellesley), Matt Smalley (Cumberland, RI), Patrick Gaffney (Worcester), Kevin Gould (Duxbury), Jake Beebe (Sudbury), Garrett Pedley (Bow, NH) and Jon Hayes (Waltham) will all be competing for a spot on the 23-man active roster.
A new addition to the Cannons, JJ Morrissey of Winchester has also signed his one-year contract. Following a successful high school and college career at The Governor's Academy and University of Virginia, respectively, Morrissey was drafted into the MLL and played for the Los Angeles Riptide in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. After a few years teaching abroad, Morrissey has returned to the States and is looking forward to continuing his professional career at home in Boston.
