NCAA Wrap Up

#15 Duke continued their strong play after some early season struggles by defeating #12 Loyola Maryland, 14-9, on Friday night. The Blue Devils’ defense held the Greyhounds without a goal in the first half on their way to what was a surprisingly easy victory. Senior attackman Zach Howell led the Blue Devils with four goals and an assist. Freshman Jordan Wolf, four goals, was one of six other Duke players to score multiple points in the game. Goalie Dan Wigrizer held Loyola scoreless in the first half and made 13 saves on the day. When the Greyhounds finally picked up their offense in the second half, Mike Sawyer led the way with five goals.

Howell, a Cannons draftee, picked up another goal on Sunday in Duke’s 18-5 win over Mercer. Howell has played well all year and leads the Blue Devils in scoring with 17 goals and three assists.

#10 North Carolina traveled to #7 Princeton Friday night and pulled off the upset, 9-5. The Tigers opened up a 3-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game but the Tar Heels stepped up their game and outscored Princeton 9-2 over the rest of the contest. UNC’s pressure on the ball was impressive as goalie Chris Madalon only had to make five saves in the victory. Thomas Wood led the attack for the Tar Heels, scoring three goals and an assist. Tigers goalie Tyler Fiorito had a strong game with 14 saves but could not carry his team to victory.

Syracuse Senior Stephen Keogh scored his fourth goal of the game with just over two minutes remaining in overtime to lift the #1 Orange to a 9-8 win over #20 Georgetown in the opening game of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic.  Syracuse never trailed in the contest, but the game was close and physical throughout.  Syracuse goalie John Galloway made 13 saves for the Orange to preserve the tie before Keogh picked up his second overtime winner of the season. Davey Emala was the Hoyas’ leading scorer with five goals.

#9 Cornell got some strong play out of its defense but was unable to hold on to a victory over #2 Virginia in the second game of the Face-Off Classic. Virginia scored four unanswered goals in the third and fourth quarters to take its first lead of the day. Cornell’s Max Feely returned from injury and shut down the Cavaliers leading scorer Steele Stanwick while stars Chris Bocklet and Shamel Bratton were each held to a goal apiece. Virginia’s role players came alive, including Colin Briggs with three goals and Rhamel Bratton with two, to spur the Cavaliers to a comeback victory.

In the final game of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic, #17 Johns Hopkins routed UMBC 16-5. Senior Kyle Wharton scored five seconds into the game for the Blue Jays, who never lost the lead after that point. Senior Chris Boland scored five goals in a game that saw nine Blue Jays find the back of the net. Under constant pressure, freshman goalie Adam Cohen did all he could for UMBC, making 11 saves.

#3 Notre Dame held off a late rally from #14 Denver to earn a 10-9 win on the road. Sophomore attackman Ryan Foley scored his first career hat trick to lead the way for the Fighting Irish. The score was tied 7-7 in the third quarter before Notre Dame scored three straight goals to take the lead heading into the fourth. Denver held the Irish scoreless in the final period while Patrick Baxter picked up two goals for the Pioneers. Denver had possession of the ball for the final minute but failed to score. Notre Dame goalie John Kemp made 13 saves on the day to preserve the win for the Irish.
