Cannons in the NLL

It was a tough weekend in the NLL as seven Cannons were in action but only two were able to pick up a victory.

The action got underway Friday night as the Boston Blazers headed west to take on Cannons’ star Paul Rabil and the Washington Stealth. Rabil scored the first two goals for the Stealth and picked up five loose balls to bring his total for the year to 126, second in the NLL. Greg Downing had a good game for the Blazers, scooping up a team high 10 loose balls while adding an assist. Kevin Buchanan had a strong second half with three assists. On defense, Mitch Belisle picked up six loose balls and Jack Reid got two of his own.

This game was a story of two halves as both goalies played well. The Stealth scored five goals in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 6-2 lead. The Blazers scored six goals in the second half as Jamie Rooney’s fourth goal of the game tied it up with just under 90 seconds to play. However, the Stealth struck last as they scored a powerplay goal with only one second left on the clock. Both goalies did all they could with Tyler Richards making 42 saves for the Stealth while Blazers netminder Anthony Cosmo made 41 stops of his own.

Washington moved into second place in the West Division with the win and now sit at 6-6 on the year. The Stealth also clinched a playoff spot and a chance to defend their title with the win.

The Blazers were in action again on Saturday night as they took on the Mammoth in Colorado. Buchanan had another three-assist game and also picked up a goal, two loose balls and forced a turnover. Downing was active on defense once again, finishing second on the team with seven loose balls. Belisle had an assist to go along with three loose balls and two turnovers. Rounding out the effort by Cannons players was Reid with two loose balls and two forced turnovers.

The Blazers actually pulled out to a lead after a close first half. Ryan Powell scored three minutes into the fourth quarter to give Boston an 8-5 lead. However, the Mammoth scored three straight goals in the final seven minutes to force overtime. Game MVP John Grant Jr. scored his second goal of the game two and a half minutes into overtime to seal the win for the Mammoth.

The Blazers have lost four straight games and now sit at 6-7 on the year. A preseason favorite to win the NLL Championship this year, Boston now sits in fourth place in the East Division and clings to the last playoff spot in the division.

Kyle Sweeney played in his second game for his new team as the Edmonton Rush entertained the Minnesota Swarm on Friday night. Sweeney filled up the stat sheet, picking up an assist, six loose balls and forcing three turnovers. The star of the game was Edmonton forward Zack Greer who picked up five goals and two assists including the game winner with four seconds to play.

With the win, Edmonton now stands at 3-8 on the year but they moved ahead of Minnesota for the fourth and final play off spot in the West.

Finally, Ryan Boyle and Patrick Heim were in action as the Philadelphia Wings traveled to Rochester to take on the Knighthawks. The usually pass-first Boyle picked up a hat trick in the first half. His three goals led the Wings while he also scooped up five loose balls in a strong outing. After a lengthy absence due to injury, Heim picked up two loose balls and won a face off. Edmonton held the lead entering the fourth quarter but a 5-1 run in the final frame was enough for the Knighthawks to steal the victory.
