Cannons in the NLL

Only one playoff spot remains in the NLL as the Blazers clinched the last spot in the East with a win on Saturday.

The Blazers wrapped up their home schedule for the 2011 regular season with a 9-7 win over the Philadelphia Wings. Kevin Buchanan scored his 19thgoal of the year, grabbed two assists and picked up two loose balls as part of the Blazers victory. Greg Downing notched an assist, on what turned out to be the winning goal, when he hooked up with Dan Dawson early in the fourth quarter. Downing and Mitch Belisle had three loose balls each while Jack Reid had two in defense.

Ryan Boyle played well for the Wings, scoring two goals and an assist to go along with two loose balls. Boyle scored with six minutes to go to make it a one goal game before Dawson scored his fifth goal of the game to put it away. Patrick Heim played a solid game in defense for the Wings, scooping up five loose balls and winning two of three face-offs.

With the win, the Blazers clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the East and knocked the Wings out of the mix. The Blazers wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Buffalo in what could be a first round playoff preview. The Wings will close out their season on Saturday as well, when they travel to Minnesota.

While the Blazers clinched their playoff spot, the Edmonton Rush lost control of their own destiny by losing 13-6 at home to Colorado. Kyle Sweeney had two assists and four loose balls for the Rush in a game that was dominated by Mammoth goalie Chris Levis, who made 38 saves in the win. If Edmonton had won they would have clinched a play off birth, but now they’ll have to win their last game of the season against Toronto on Saturday and hope that Colorado loses as well.

Paul Rabil and the Washington Stealth were also in action on Saturday, defeating the Minnesota Swarm, 16-15 in overtime. However, Rabil’s appearance turned out to be nothing more than a cameo as he was given a game misconduct penalty and ejected from the game for head butting, just a minute into the second quarter. Rabil was able to pick up two loose balls and force a turnover before getting tossed. Lewis Ratcliff scored for the Stealth to tie the game at 15, his sixth goal of the game, with just 20 seconds to go before Rhys Duch scored the game winner, his fifth on the day, just 30 seconds into the extra period. The Stealth can lock up the second seed in the West on Saturday with a win when they take on Rochester.
