MLL News and Notes

PLAYOFF PICTURE BEGINS TO CLEAR UP: With their 10-9 victory over the Denver Outlaws on Saturday night, the Boston Cannons became the first team to secure a spot in the 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior and can secure the top seed with a win over Hamilton on Saturday night. Denver and Hamilton can clinch a spot this weekend with a win while Long Island qualifies for the postseason with a win and a loss by Chesapeake. The complete list of playoff scenarios is available on page 5 of this week’s MLL release.

UNCONNECT FOUR: After winning five of their first six games, the Denver Outlaws enter their game against the Long Island Lizards this week with a four-game losing streak following a tough 10-9 loss against Boston last Saturday. During the four-game losing streak, the Outlaws have averaged just 9.75 points per game. Meanwhile, attackman Brendan Mundorf has been limited to just five goals over the last four games; he scored three goals against Boston on Saturday.

DEUCES WILD: Long Island Lizards midfielder Stephen Peyser tied a Major League Lacrosse single-game record last Thursday night when he tallied three two-point goals in the Lizards’ 15-6 victory over Rochester. Peyser, who had not tallied a two-point goal in his career prior to this season, became the seventh player in MLL history to accomplish the feat and the first since attackman Matt Danowski had three two-point goals against Chicago last year.

TWO OF A KIND: Long Island Lizards midfielder Stephen Peyser and attackman Matt Danowski have combined to score 12 of the team’s 13 two-point goals, which leads the MLL. Peyser and Danowski have each scored six two-point goals this year, which are the most in the MLL. The Lizards’ 13 two-point goals this year are tied for the 10th-highest total in league history.

20-20 VISION: Rochester goalkeeper John Galloway posted a season-high 20 saves in the Rattlers’  15-6 loss against the Long Island Lizards on Thursday night, marking the first 20-save performance of his career. Galloway, who ranks fifth in the MLL with a 13.15 goals against average and a .543 save percentage, also had 19 saves against Denver on July 16.

NEARING A MILESTONE: After winning 11 of 26 face-offs against the Hamilton Nationals on Saturday night, Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Alex Smith enters this week needing just three face-off wins to become the third player in MLL history to earn 1,000 face-off victories. In his fifth MLL season, the former University of Delaware midfielder has won 58.8 per cent of his face-off attempts. He leads the MLL with 145 face-off wins in 10 games this year.

MISTER ASSISTER: Hamilton Nationals defenseman Brodie Merrill recorded a season-high three assists in the Nationals’ 16-6 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks to earn MLL Defensive Player of the Week honors. Merrill, who is the five-time reigning Warrior MLL Defensive Player of the Year, leads all MLL defensemen with 11 assists this year and has 95 career points entering this week’s action.

A ‘BOLT’ OF OFFENSE: After scoring two goals with two assists in the Hamilton Nationals’ win over Chesapeake on Saturday night, rookie attackman Jeremy Boltus enters this week’s game against Boston with a six-game goal-scoring streak along with a 10-game point streak. During the last six games, Boltus has scored 16 of his 18 goals while contributing five assists.

BRODIE 500: With nine ground balls in the Nationals’ 16-6 victory over Chesapeake last Saturday, Hamilton Nationals defenseman Brodie Merrill moved closer to becoming the MLL’s all-time leader in ground balls. Entering Saturday’s game against Boston, Merrill has tallied 516 ground balls in his seven-year career. Paul Cantabene is the all-time leader with 538 ground balls.

30 ROCK: With his two-point goal in the Bayhawks’ 12-11 overtime victory over Hamilton on July 16, Chesapeake midfielder Kyle Dixon became the second player in MLL history to tally 30 career two-point goals. Dixon, who has scored five goals with six assists this year, needs three more two-point goals to tie the all-time record held by Roy Colsey.

POINT TAKEN: Rochester Rattlers attackman Ned Crotty has tallied a point in 17 straight games after scoring a goal with two assists in the Rattlers’ 15-6 loss against Long Island on Thursday night. Crotty, who is tied for the MLL lead with 41 points, has recorded two or more points in each of his last 15 games, including a career-high seven points against Hamilton on June 10.
