Cannons RE-BUILD ROSTER IN EXPANSION AND SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFTS

Cannons Return Key Players and Add Talent to Prepare to Defend the Title in 2012

December 15, 2011 - BOSTON, MA - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, re-built their roster to 37 players following the Expansion Draft on December 7 and the Supplemental Draft on December 14, according to Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney.

With the 11th overall pick in the Expansion Draft (obtained in a trade with the Ohio Machine), the Cannons selected Bill McGlone, a midfielder left unprotected by Denver. In seven games with the Outlaws last season, McGlone scored nine goals and added eight assists for 17 points on the season. McGlone was drafted by the Bayhawks in 2006 after graduating as a three-time All-American from Maryland and has scored 95 MLL career goals.

In addition to gaining McGlone, the Cannons were able to hold onto veteran defensemen and team leader Kyle Sweeney, offensive midfielder Mike Stone, defensive midfielder JJ Morrissey, long pole enforcer Jack Reid and face-off specialist John Ortolani.

Cannons losses in the Expansion Draft included Max Quinzani, selected second overall by Charlotte who then traded him to Long Island; Greg Downing (Denver); Kip Turner (Chesapeake); Matt Casey (Ohio); and Josh Amidon (Charlotte).

"Obviously, we're disappointed to lose members of our championship team," said new Cannons head coach Steve Duffy. "But we're happy with the guys we were able to bring back and that we were able to add All-Star midfielder Bill McGlone, who is excited to play for us in Boston."

In the Supplemental Draft, the Cannons added 18 players beginning with Jon Hayes, selected 8th overall. Hayes, a midfielder from Waltham, MA, earned a spot on the active roster for the last two games of the regular season and Championship Weekend in 2011, contributing an assist and three ground balls. With the second pick, 16th overall, the Cannons chose defenseman Ryan Nizolek of New Haven, CT, who played in five games for the Cannons last season.

In addition to Hayes and Nizolek, the Cannons renamed to the roster Tom Burke, midfield (4th round, 32nd overall); Bruce Bickford, goalie (6th round, 48th overall); Jason Duboe, midfield (7th round, 56th overall); Pat Gaffney, defense (12th round, 96th overall); DJ Hessler, attack (13th round, 104th overall); Garrett Pedley, defense (14th round, 112th overall); Kevin Gould, attack (16th round, 128th overall); and Jake Beebe, attack (17th round, 136th overall).

"We're happy to get guys we're familiar with back on our roster, while adding some solid talent," said Duffy of the Supplemental Draft.

Players new to the Cannons roster include attackmen Ari Sussman (2nd round, 16th overall), Shane Koppens (5th round, 40th overall), and Jed Prossner (9th round, 72nd overall); midfielders Brian Vetter (10th round, 80th overall) and David Hawley (11th round, 88th overall); defenseman Ethan Vedder (15th round, 120th overall); and goalies Chris Collins (8th round, 64th overall) and Eric Hagarty (18th round, 144th overall).

"We accomplished our goals through both drafts," said Barney. "Out of the 19 guys who played for us during Championship Weekend, we got 17 back, which is great considering it's an expansion year. In addition, we were able to add a great talent in Bill McGlone and select local prospects that will now have the opportunity to compete for a spot on our opening day roster."

Next up for the Cannons is the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft which will take place on Friday, January 13th in Philadelphia, PA. The Cannons currently have 10 picks in the draft, the most of any MLL team. Following the Collegiate Draft, the Cannons will host an open try-out in Boston, date to be determined, sponsored by CroART Lacrosse and CATZ Training. Local players who have registered in the MLL Player Pool will have the opportunity to impress the Cannons coaching staff and earn one of the remaining roster spots for pre-season training camp.
