The first quarter was a defensive battle with just one goal scored, as Ryan Boyle beat his defender from behind the cage to get the Cannons on the board after 10 minutes of play. Chesapeake came out firing in the second quarter, beginning with Powell's 400th career point in his return to MLL action. But the Cannons took control to close the half, rattling off five straight from Kevin Buchanan, Matt Poskay, Paul Rabil, Stephen Berger and Mike Stone to take a 6-3 lead into the break.

As the third quarter opened Chesapeake again dominated early, scoring five straight goals to take an 8-6 lead. Brian Farrell got the Cannons on the board after 10 minutes on a Cam Flint assist, and Rabil and Poskay each scored their second of the night. John Grant Jr. was awarded a goal at the buzzer, but upon official review it was determined the shot came after time expired and the Cannons took a 9-8 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

Will Manny opened the fourth quarter scoring to increase the Cannons' lead to two, but Grant and Ben Rubeor answered to tie it back up at 10. Rabil and Poskay scored back-to-back to complete their hat tricks and give the Cannons another two-goal cushion, but Drew Westervelt scored is first of the night and Powell scored his third with five seconds left to send the game into extra time.

After trading possessions, the Bayhawks went man-up as the Cannons were called for an illegal substitution and they took advantage, with Westervelt scoring the game-winner 3:14 into overtime, giving the Bayhawks (7-4) their first win in four overtime games this season. Jordan Burke made 17 saves in the loss.

The Cannons next travel to face the second-place Hamilton Nationals on Saturday, July 27 (7pm).
