Machine Defeat Cannons, 16-12

With One Game Remaining, Cannons Postseason Fate Remains Unclear

August 3, 2013 - Boston, MA - ??The last place Ohio Machine came out on fire and never looked back, stunning the Boston Cannons, 16-12, in front of 8,701 fans at Harvard Stadium. Rookie Will Manny led the Cannons with four points on three goals and an assist, but the Cannons never led as Ohio earned just their second win of the season.

Following the Cannons' loss, the Charlotte Hounds defeated the Hamilton Nationals, punching a ticket to their first Championship Weekend and eliminating Boston in the process. This the first time since 2008 - and only the third time in team history - that the Cannons have not made a postseason appearance.

The first quarter started out like many have for the Cannons (5-8) this season. Ohio ran out to a 4-0 lead just six minutes into the game. Matt Poskay, with a nifty behind-the-back goal, and Stephen Berger stemmed the onslaught, but Ohio would close out the quarter with three straight goals. Five different players scored for the Machine as they took a 7-2 lead.

The second quarter looked much like the first, with Ohio rattling off three consecutive goals, including two from Logan Schuss, who led all players with six points (four goals, two assists). Cam Flint assisted on goals by Manny and Kevin Buchanan, but Ohio had complete control going into the break, leading 10-4.

In the third frame, the Cannons finally struck first. Manny found Poskay for a powerplay goal before Manny notched one of his own, but Schuss completed his hat trick and Jake Bernhardt scored unassisted to keep the Cannons at bay. Buchanan scored his first two-pointer of the season and Mike Stone netted a shot with less than five seconds remaining to bring the Cannons back to within three entering the final 15 minutes of play.

The beginning of the fourth quarter looked just like the second, with the Machine burying three goals in a row. Bernhardt joined Schuss and Kiel Matisz to make it a trio of Machine hat tricks. The Cannons attempted a comeback with two Berger strikes and a Manny score, but the damage had been done and Ohio held on for the victory.

The Ohio offense scored a season-high 16 points and Machine goalie Scott Rodgers had a monster night, stopping 22 shots to earn Player of the Game honors. Paul Rabil was held scoreless for the second time this season and, despite Chris Eck winning 72% of face-offs, the Cannons could not find a rhythm on offense.

The Cannons return to Harvard Stadium next Saturday, August 10 to face the Rochester Rattlers (7pm) in the regular season finale.
