Rattlers Claim Fifth Place in Final 2013 Major League Lacrosse Standings

August 10, 2013 - Boston, MA - ??In the final game of the regular season, the Rochester Rattlers won the battle for fifth place by defeating the Boston Cannons, 23-14, in front of 7,130 fans at Harvard Stadium. The Cannons again struggled in the opening quarter, as rookie Dave Lawson scored two goals for the Rattlers to begin the first. Matt Poskay and Rabil answered to keep it close at 4-2, but Rochester closed out the quarter on a three-goal run to bring their lead to five.

The second quarter began with a spark of life from the Cannons. Three straight goals from Rabil, rookie Will Manny (who finished with four on the night), and Brent Adams brought the Cannons within two, but Striebel struck twice in a row from behind the arc to quickly erase Boston's comeback attempt. During the frame, Chris Eck won his 1,000th career face-off on his way winning 65% in the game.

A high-scoring third quarter saw 14 goals, including two three-goal runs from the Rattlers and Striebel's third two-pointer. The Cannons netted six during the quarter, including Michael Maggio's first career goal, but the lead ballooned to ten for the Rattlers as they entered the final 15 minutes of play up 21-11.

In a calm fourth quarter, the Rattlers scored just twice while the Cannons got one each from Mike Stone, Manny and Kevin Buchanan. But the Rattlers had all but wrapped up the victory, securing fifth place with a 6-8 record. It was the first time Rochester swept Boston since the 2008 season, the last time the Cannons missed the playoffs. The Cannons finish in sixth with a 5-9 record after closing out the season on a four-game losing streak.

Following the game, the Cannons announced the 2013 Team Awards:

  • Rookie of the Year: Scott Ratliff
  • 11th Man Award: Matt Smalley
  • Offensive Player of the Year: Mike Stone
  • Defensive Player of the Year: Kyle Sweeney
  • Most Valuable Player: Paul Rabil

Stone ended the season with a career-high 34 points (25 goals, 9 assists). Chris Eck finished with two career bests: a 59.8 face-off win percentage and a total of 113 ground balls, the third-most by any player in the history of the MLL. Rabil's 54 points on the season place him third in the league, one point behind both Chris Bocklet (Denver) and Kevin Crowley (Hamilton).
