Friday, May 2
BOSTON, MA – (April 29, 2014) The Cannons have started off on the right foot in 2014 with a win in their home opener. In the Cannons’ season opener Sunday, offseason moves translated into immediate on-field success as the Cannons beat the defending MLL champions, Chesapeake Bayhawks, 15-9.
The Cannons now travel to Rochester, NY to face the Rattlers for their first road trip of the season this Friday, May 2nd at 7:30pm. The Rattlers are looking for their first win of the season in their home opener after falling to the NY Lizards 18-15 last week.
In the offensive end on Sunday, five players scored for the Cannons, led by veteran Kevin Buchanan, who had seven goals and was named the MLL Warrior Offensive Player of the week. Will Manny added a hat trick and two assists, Paul Rabil had two goals and three assists, and Stephen Berger also scored twice.
On the defensive end, six-time Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year, Brodie Merrill made an immediate impact, collecting 5 ground balls, joining Cannons Goalie Jordan Burke, who had 15 saves, in controlling the vaunted Chesapeake offensive attack.
Both teams struggled to find the back of the net early with Kevin Buchanan breaking the scoreless tie just over 9 minutes into the contest with his first of 7 goals on the night. The Cannons outscored Chesapeake 10-5 over the 2nd and 3rd quarters to put the game out of reach.
