August 8, 2011 - BOSTON, MA - Goalie Jordan Burke was named the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Defensive Player of the Week and midfielder Kevin Buchanan was named the MLL Offensive Player of the Week for their performances in Saturday's 13-8 win over the Hamilton Nationals. Burke tied his career-high with 24 saves against the second place Nationals, while Buchanan scored four goals and one assist for five points. With the win, the Cannons clinched the 2011 regular season title and the #1 seed at the 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend.
Burke earned both MLL Defensive Player of the Week and Bud Light Player of the Game honors for the second time this season after matching his career high in saves. He made 15 of his 24 saves in the second half, including nine in the fourth quarter, as the Cannons earned their second straight win. The MLL leader with a .621 save percentage, Burke ranks second in the MLL with 159 saves and a 10.42 goals against average.
"Jordan has stepped up in a big way this year," said Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye. "Every team is a contender in this league, each with a huge amount of offensive talent. As a result, we've had a number of close games this season, including Saturday, and Jordan has kept us in all of them."
Buchanan, who earned the first MLL Offensive Player of the Week award of his career, scored two of his five goals in the first quarter as the Cannons jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and the other two during a five-goal run in the fourth quarter to secure the win. The Cannons' sixth-leading scorer with 21 points in eight games this season, Buchanan has scored 17 goals, including a two-point goal, with three assists.
"Kevin is a key member of our offense," continued Daye. "From starting a play to finishing, he knows what he needs to do when he's on the field and he executes successfully. Saturday was a big game for us - we wanted the regular season title and to clinch the #1 seed - and Kevin took it upon himself to step up and help make that happen."
The Cannons return home for the regular season finale this Saturday, August 13 at 7:00pm at Harvard Stadium. The Cannons will then play in the first semi-final game at the 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend on Saturday, August 27 at 12:00pm at Navy Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, MD. The championship game takes place Sunday, August 28 at 3:00pm.
