The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced they have completed a trade with the Chesapeake Bayhawks that will send midfielder Justin Smith to Chesapeake in exchange for defenseman P.T. Ricci and a fifth round pick in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft.
Ricci, the 11
th pick in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft, will add youth and depth to the Cannons defensive corps. In his first two seasons in the league, both with the Bayhawks, Ricci played in 18 games, scoring two goals and an assist while picking up 73 ground balls. Although only in his third season, Ricci brings winning experience to the Cannons, having been a member of the 2010 MLL Champion Bayhawks.
"The addition of PT Ricci not only adds depth to our defensive unit but also gives an additional player who is great at getting the ball off the turf and pushing transition, which is essential in this league," said Cannons head coach Bill Daye.
Before entering professional play with MLL, Ricci played at Loyola (MD) where he led the team with 91 ground balls as a senior. The Wayne, PA native was a star in lacrosse, football and track during his days in high school.
Smith joined the Cannons mid-way through the 2009 season, playing in five games and scoring five goals. Last year, Smith played in all twelve games for the team, finishing with 19 goals. Smith graduated from Salisbury in 2005 and was the 16
th pick in the MLL Collegiate Draft that year.
