CANNONS ADD EIGHT IN 2014 MLL COLLEGIATE DRAFT
January 10, 2014 – PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, selected eight players in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft, beginning with
Scott McWilliams, a two-time USILA All-American senior defenseman at the University of Virginia.
McWilliams is a strong defenseman returning for his senior season with the Cavaliers. His freshman year at UVA, McWilliams appeared in all 18 games, starting every single contest as a true freshman and was tied for second on the team with 16 caused turnovers. As a sophomore, he had 29 ground balls and was a USILA All-American honorable mention. As a junior had 48 ground balls, caused at least one turnover in all 15 games except for the season finale against North Carolina, finished the season No. 2 in the nation with 36 caused turnovers, and was a USILA second-team All-American.
In the third round, with the #17 pick, the Cannons selected another UVA star,
Rob Emery, a two-time USILA All-American and a member of the 2013 ACC All-Academic team. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound midfielder has recorded at least 20 points in each of his first three seasons at Virginia. His freshman year, he tallied six points in the NCAA Tournament, helping the Cavaliers to the NCAA title. Last year, Emery scored 22 goals while adding 6 assists, earning him Third-Team All-American.
Two picks later at #19, the Cannons selected
Austin Kaut, a goalie out of Penn State University. In 2013, his .610% put him 2
nd in the nation for save percentage. Kaut’s 7.37 goals against average put him 3
rd in the nation and earned him a spot as a First Team All-American.
“Scott McWilliams is an incredibly athletic cover defensemen who can play close or midfield-defense,”
Head Coach John Tucker stated. “Rob Emery is one of the biggest, strongest midfielders in the game today who can score with both hands. He is also very good off the ground, and defensively. Austin Kaut is unquestionably the best goalkeeper in college lacrosse, and he is a guy who can press for a starting position right away.”
In the fifth round the team added another defenseman,
Jack Reilly of Johns Hopkins. The Cannons then took
Erik Smith, midfielder from Air force, and the first Falcon to be drafted in MLL by Boston. The Cannons rounded out their 2014 draft class with
Phil Poe, face-off midfielder, UMBC, and Cohasset, MA native
Jack Murphy, goalie, Fairfield.
"We feel that we drafted some incredibly talented players and phenomenal young men," said Cannons
head coach John Tucker. "We addressed needs at all of our positions, and feel these guys can step in immediately and help our franchise."
