After a long winter, field lacrosse has finally returned to action. Many college programs began their 2012 campaigns this past weekend. All eyes are set on Gillette Stadium, where the NCAA Final Four will take place on Memorial Day Weekend. With the season underway, it is time to start tracking the Cannons’ draftees.
Chris Boland led the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays to a 12-6 victory over Towson. Boland had 4 goals before leaving the game with a shoulder injury. His return is uncertain, but according to the Baltimore Sun the injury is not season-ending. The Blue Jays can be seen on ESPNU on Tuesday, February 21 at 5:00 pm and again on Saturday, February 25 at 3:00 pm.
Kevin Cunningham earned Big East Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in Villanova’s first game. Villanova topped Lehigh, 17-7. Cunningham tallied 5 goals and 2 assists. The Wildcats’ next game is on Saturday against Bucknell.
North Carolina rolled over Detroit in their home opener. The Tar Heels are now 3-0 on the season. Cannons draftee and Heels captain
Mark Staines picked up 3 ground balls and caused a turnover.
Chris Clements recovered 2 ground balls for the Virginia Cavaliers as they edged Drexel, 9-8. Virginia will host Stony Brook on Saturday. The game will be shown on ESPN3 at 12:00 pm.
Martin Bowes (1 goal, 1 assist) and Hartford dropped their season opener to Maryland, 12-6.

Greg Mahony (Yale) will begin their seasons this weekend. Penn will visit Duke on Friday, February 24. On Saturday, Cornell will travel to Hobart College and Yale will host St. John’s.
