After a disappointing 2013 campaign, the Boston Cannons return to action this Sunday at home, and there is no better way to measure where you are at than taking on the 2-time defending MLL champions. The Cannons will welcome the Chesapeake Bayhawks to Harvard Stadium in the first of two match-ups between the rivals this season.
The Cannons split the 2013 season series with Chesapeake 1-1, with both teams winning at home and needing overtime to capture the W. In the first game between the two last season, the Cannons were 0-3 and in desperate need of a win. It was a back and forth game between the teams that had won the previous two MLL titles. Neither team could stretch a lead of more than 2 goals.
The Cannons led by 1 goal after the first and at halftime but the score would be tied after the 3rd quarter and a
goal with under two minutes in regulation would send the game into overtime.
scored 1:26 into overtime as the shot clock was expiring to give the Cannons at 15-14 win, their first of the season.
John Grant Jr
led the Bayhawks offense with 5 goals and an assist for a 6 point outing. Paul Rabil was the games leading scorer with 7 points on 4 goals, including one 2-pointer, and two assists.
The second meeting in Annapolis was a different affair with similar results. This time the two teams exchanged scoring runs leading to the eventual overtime finish. From the 2nd quarter on the teams never exchanged goals, with each team going on runs as many as 5 straight goals. It was the Bayhawks who had the last run, scoring the final two goals in regulation, including the tying score with :05 to play. They would cap off the comeback with the game winner 3:14 into overtime after both teams had a chance to win. Rabil was once again the Cannons leader with 3 goals and 1 assist.
led the home team with 3 goals and 1 assist, including the game tying goal at the end of regulation.
Both teams have made significant moves in the off-season. The biggest moves were the Cannons adding all-world defenseman
in a trade with Florida, and Chesapeake adding former MLL MVP
in a trade with Denver.
Expect this game to similar as past encounters as both teams want to start off the season with a win and will be evenly matched.
