Giving back for the holidays: Pictures from Home

March 18, 2016
There’s been a fair amount of news lately about lacrosse players giving back. Notre Dame players hosting a Playing for Peace basketball tournament to raise awareness and promote peace in Sudan; the Chesapeake Bayhawks volunteering at the Maryland Food Bank; and lots of extra facial hair on laxers the world over for Movember.

Here in Massachusetts, local high school coach and Olde New England Lacrosse League (ONELL) player Sean Noonan does his part every holiday season. A sports photographer, Noonan will host his 7th annual Pictures from Home event on December 13th in Foxboro. Noonan takes portraits of military families from around New England and sends them to troops stationed around the world, all at no cost to the families.

Pictures from Home isn’t Noonan’s first great idea. As a sophomore, he helped found Xaverian Brothers High school lacrosse team. He later began his coaching career as a volunteer, taking the helm of MetroLacrosse’s Hyde Park boys team for two years. For eight years and counting, he’s been the head freshman coach at his high school alma mater, and this spring will help with his son’s youth team in Easton, MA. All the while, he’s been staying limber in ONELL, as a member of the over-30 MetroLacrosse Stale Doughnuts team and the over-40 Misfits.

It was during a conversation with a Xaverian teammate that the idea for Pictures from Home was born. Noonan asked his friend, now a Lieutenant Colonel in the New Hampshire National Guard, what civilians could send overseas to best help the troops. He said they couldn’t get enough pictures of their families. Ever since, Noonan has been sending our troops a little piece of home for the holidays.

Want to Help?
As Pictures from Home has grown - last year Noonan sent 210 portrait packages around the world - so have Noonan’s costs. To be a part of this holiday event, donations of any amount can be made here. $10 covers a package sent abroad and $7 covers a domestic package.
