Goalie Kip Turner Named MLL Defensive Player of the Week
Turner's 21-Save Performance Leads Cannons Past Long Island, 15-12
May 16, 2011 - BOSTON, MA - Goalkeeper Kip Turner has been named the Week 1 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today. In leading the Cannons to a 15-12 victory over the Long Island Lizards on Saturday night, Turner made 21 saves and allowed just 11 goals. He made 11 of his 21 saves in the first half as the Cannons jumped out to a 7-6 half-time lead and held on for the victory.
Turner recorded his first 20-save effort since July 10, 2010 when he helped the Cannons to a 15-9 victory over the Bayhawks with a 20-save performance. It was also the sixth 20-save game of his career.
The 2010 Warrior MLL Goalkeeper of the Year, Turner ranked second in the MLL last year with an 11.70 goals against average while leading the league with a .595 save percentage. He also led the MLL with 176 saves in 12 games, a 14.67 average.
Turner and the Cannons next face the Denver Outlaws and the Week 1 MLL Offensive Player of the Week Brendan Mundorf. In Denver's season opening 18-10 win over the Hamilton Nationals, Mundorf set an Outlaws single-game record with 10 points, finishing with six goals and four assists. His 10 points tied an MLL record for the most in a season opener, previously held by Ryan Powell for his 2004 opening day performance with the Rochester Rattlers.
The Cannons vs Outlaws game takes place Saturday, May 21 at Harvard Stadium at 7pm.
