Boston, MA (August 6, 2014) - The Boston Cannons enter the final game of theregular season needing a win and an Ohio Machine loss to reach the playoffs. Their opponent, the Rochester Rattlers, have already locked up a spot in the playoffs but will be fighting for the top position in the Major League Lacrosse regular season standings. The Cannons will be without superstar
Paul Rabil who suffered a season ending foot injury last weekend against the Florida Launch.
"You can't replace a great player like that. Everyone needs to step up," Cannons Head Coach
John Tucker stated.
The Cannons, who needed a win last weekend to keep their playoff hopes alive, rallied together to defeat the Launch at home. The Cannons used a barrage of offense in the first half to take a commanding lead and were able to hold onto the lead as the Launch stormed back in the second half.
The Cannons should be ready to fight for their spot in the playoffs but will be missing one of their biggest offensive playmakers in Paul Rabil. The Cannons will also be looking to avenge their week 2 loss to the Rattlers in Rochester when they had a last second shot saved to lose 9-8. Offensively the Cannons will be lead by both
Will Manny and
Kevin Buchanan who both have scored 32 goals on the season. Defensively the Cannons will rely on goalie
Jordan Burke who was named the Coca-Cola Player of the game last week for his stellar performance in net. The Cannons will also look towards All-Star
Kyle Sweeney and partner on defense
With a spot in the playoffs being on the line expect the Cannons to throw everything they can at net in order to create as many scoring chances as possible. Rochester has an extremely balanced attack on offense with 7 players tallying more than 20 points on the season and 7 players scoring at least 12 goals on the season. The Rattlers also are one of the most accurate teams when shooting the ball, while they do not shoot the ball often the Rattlers have a team shooting percentage of .310 and have 10 players shooting over a percentage of .300.
The Cannons only have one possible scenario to make the playoffs entering the final game. They must beat the Rattlers and they also need the Florida Launch to defeat the Ohio Machine. If this scenario plays out the Machine and Cannons will both have a 7-7 record but the Cannons have the tiebreaker by beating the Machine in both games this season. If the Cannons make the playoffs they will be the #4 seed and will have to travel to either Rochester or Denver for the semifinal of the playoffs.
Head Coach John Tucker reiterated, "We just need to focus on playing 60 minute of lacrosse."
