Tufts University men’s lacrosse, ranked #1 in Division III, captured a thrilling win against #2 Stevenson University on March 23 at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland. Due to severe weather conditions the game, which was scheduled to start at 4pm, was delayed 9:45pm. With the win Tufts improved to 4-0 on the season.
It was the junior class that carried the Jumbos to victory. Junior goalie Steven Foglietta (Oceanside, NY) finished the game with 24 saves while classmate Kevin McCormick (Laytonsville, MD) scored three goals and three assists for the Jumbos. Sean Kirwan (Boonton Township, NJ) was also strong offensively adding four goals of his own.
Stevenson, who fell to 8-1 on the season, was led by senior Neal Barthelme (Towson, MD) who scored four goals and added an assist for the Mustangs. Fellow senior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster, MD), a First Team All-American last season, added a goal and three assists.
Tufts scored first in the contest with a goal by senior Matt Witko (Chappaqua, NY), but Stevenson scored the next two goals which put Stevenson up 2-1. Tufts then went on a four-goal run to end the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead.
Stevenson started the second quarter with a four-goal run of their own with two goals by senior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, PA) to take a 6-5 lead. With only 1:28 left in the second quarter Tufts scored three goals including two by senior D.J. Hessler (Monkton, MD) to put the Jumbos up 8-6 at halftime.
The Jumbos scored two more goals early in the third quarter to put them up 10-6 but Stevenson quickly answered by scoring three out of the four goals to make the score 11-9. Tufts struck again late in the third when Hessler scored his third of the game to put Tufts up 12-9 going into the fourth quarter.
With 12:47 left in the fourth quarter, the Jumbos led 13-10. Barthelme made it a one goal game with a pair of goals with 8:34 remaining. Tufts’ Witko scored with 4:32 remaining to put the Jumbos up 14-12. Two minutes later, sophomore Tyler Reid (Clinton, CT) scored for the Mustangs to again bring them within one.
With just one minute left Barthelme rattled a shot off the post and Tufts collected the rebound but quickly turned it over. Foglietta made a clutch save and the Jumbos were able to hold on to their lead and run out the final minute of play for the 14-13 win - which ended at 11:30pm.
