Rabil, Abbott, Matthews Earn MLL Weekly Honors

March 18, 2016
BOSTON, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending August 5, 2012, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil was honored as the MLL’s Offensive Player of the Week while Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Matt Abbott earned the Defensive Player of the Week award.

In addition, attackman Mark Matthews of the Denver Outlaws was selected as the recipient of the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week award for the second straight week.

Rabil led the Cannons to a 19-13 victory over the Ohio Machine on Saturday night at Harvard Stadium, scoring three goals, including a two-point marker, with three assists. He recorded two of his three assists in the second quarter while scoring a two-point goal as Boston scored eight goals to overcome a 5-4 deficit en route to the victory. He also added a pair of goals in the fourth quarter.

The MLL’s leading scorer with 68 points, Rabil is now tied for third on the MLL’s all-time single-season points list. He also leads the MLL with 37 assists while his 25 goals rank sixth in the league. Entering the Cannons’ season finale at Ohio, the former Johns Hopkins University standout needs four points to break the MLL single-season points record, which was set by attackman John Grant, Jr. in 2007 as a member of the Rochester Rattlers.

Meanwhile, Abbott helped a Chesapeake defense limit Long Island to a season-low six goals en route to a 13-6 victory over the Lizards at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. Abbott, who earned the MLL Defensive Player of the Week award for the first time in his career, matched his season by recording six ground balls as the Bayhawks snapped Long Island’s three-game win streak and prevented the Lizards from securing a playoff berth.

A graduate of Syracuse University, Abbott ranks second on the Bayhawks with 40 ground balls this season. He has also scored seven goals with four assists, including a pair of two-goal efforts at Rochester on July 14 and at Boston on July 28.

Honored as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, Matthews scored two goals and added two assists in the second half while helping the Denver Outlaws secure a berth in the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior with a 17-12 win at Rochester. It marked his fifth multi-goal effort in eight games this season.

With 16 goals and 8 assists this season, Matthews ranks sixth on the Outlaws in scoring. He is also the second player in MLL history to be named as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week four times in a season, joining Boston Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle, who earned the award five times in 2004 as a member of the Philadelphia Barrage.

The final week of the 2012 MLL regular season will feature four important games. Chesapeake and Denver will face each other in a match-up to determine the top seed in the playoffs while Long Island travels to Hamilton. The Cannons will travel to Selby Stadium to face the Machine while Rochester visits Charlotte.
